Ruth Roman was born in Lynn, Massachusetts, the oldest of the three daughters of Lithuanian Jewish parents Mary Pauline (Gold) and Abraham Roman. After her father died as a Carnival barker as an infant and she was forced to provide for the family by working as a cook and server. Ruth lived in the poor tenement district in Boston, Massachusetts, where she was educated. She quit the school she was attending within two years of her education in order to pursue the profession of acting. The route she took was not without obstacles. In New York, her first job involved posing stills for crime magazines, acting work she longed to do was abyssal. While in New York, she volunteered at a bar, as the check-in lady before resigning after a few months and moving to Boston. In the New England Repertory Company was her first gig as a regular actor. The company paid her doing shifts during the day, in the ushering department. Drama studies led her to earn her degree from Bishop-Lee Theatre School.
